Cosmetic vs. Functional Rhinoplasty

The nose is a unique part of your anatomy. Right in the middle of your face for all the world to see, and the word defines what a beautiful nose should look like. The aesthetic quality of your nose may or may not be important to you; however, its function is vital to your health and well-being.

Rhinoplasty: Modification of the Nose

You have probably heard the term, “nose job” before. Rhinoplasty is nose job surgery. The procedure is performed to reshape the nose for cosmetic purposes, cosmetic rhinoplasty, or to correct an issue that interferes with your ability to breathe properly through your nose, functional rhinoplasty.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to enhance an individual’s appearance. It may or may not also be included when functional rhinoplasty is necessary. Occasionally, repair of a problem with airflow may also require a slight reshaping of the nose.

The Importance of Functional Rhinoplasty

The internal structure of the nose normally allows for smooth airflow in and out. The internal nasal valve is most often the area affected when there is a problem. The airflow may be blocked if this area is too narrow. If the cartilage here is weak, it can collapse and obstruct the airflow completely.

When the nasal septum is fractured, or has spurs that interfere with breathing, a septoplasty is performed to repair it. The septum is the bone and cartilage that separates the left and right sides of the nose.

Problems with the internal structure of the nose can make breathing difficult. Constantly breathing through the mouth can lead to a variety of oral health problems, which is why it is important to restore proper breathing capability to the nose.

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty

This is usually an elective procedure intended to enhance an individual’s appearance. Removing the “hump” from a nose, turning the tip of the nose slightly upward or making a nose look straighter are examples. With cosmetic rhinoplasty, it is important to ensure that the reshaped nose compliments your facial features and maintains a balanced look.

Dr. Ransom will work with you to ensure that you receive the best outcome whether your rhinoplasty is functional or cosmetic, or a combination of the two. Contact us today to schedule an appointment for a consultation.
