Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery is a surgical technique used to treat skin cancers in sensitive areas, such as the face and nose. This particular procedure is named after its founder and originator, Fredric E. Mohs, MD.

Using innovative microscopic techniques during his time as a medical student (1929-1934) Dr. Mohs was able to map out cancer around nerves, blood vessels, muscle and bone. He examined cancers that he removed by shaving or saucerizing excisions. This removal technique removed thin discs of tissue so the tumor and inflammatory white-cell infiltrate surrounding the cancer could be examined. (more…)
